I had to re-read this e-mail about five times. I still don't think that I'm reading it properly. I hope this is some sort of misunderstanding, though I fear it is not. What does this mean? Virginia's Attorney General wants us to discriminate? I don't get the point behind any of this.
Maybe it was because it was so late at night and my brain was getting a little loopy, but I found this section of my Anthropology book to be quite hilarious. The whores of the nonhuman primate world. I believe the phrase should be, "going at it like bonobos."
"Bonobos have the highest rates of sexual contact of all nonhuman primates. Sexual contact occurs among all possibly sex and age combinations, although rarely between close relatives. Bonobos thus have high rates of social or recreational sex, and this pattern is related to lower rates of conflict compared to chimpanzees. Bonobos use sexual contact to prevent conflict and to resolve post-conflict situations. Attractive food, or almost anything of interest to more than one bonobo, sparks sexual interest. The two bonobos will suspend potential competition for the item of interest and briefly mount each other or participate in what primatologists refer to as G-G (genital-genital) rubbing. G-G rubbing is unique to bonobos and may qualify as a cultural innovation. This activity appears to distract the two parties are reframe the relationship as one of alliance and cooperation rather than competition and conflict. In one example of conflict prevention, when one mother struck another mother's infant, the two females participated in intense G-G rubbing rather than hostility, and peace was the outcome."
Around this point in time in the Winter season I start to fantasize about Summer. Oh, beautiful, glorious Summer. Days spent outside reading books or enjoying a walk in the pleasant warmth that enfolds you. During these cold, dark days I always seem to forget the days I spend bemoaning my inability to stop sweating, the bugs... and my general unpleasant behavior once I have overheated.
I still would take the heat over cold any day. Only 4 months and a few days away...
It's that time of day again. The sun is starting to disappear behind the skyline.
In the Summertime this is the part of the day I enjoy the most. I can look forward to a little relief from the heat, people come out and explore, life feels more vibrant. During Winter it's the complete opposite feeling; I abhor this time of day. The cold gets colder, people are cranky, sullen, and keep to themselves. Things get quiet- really, really quiet. Where did everybody go? Hibernation isn't just for bears. People do it too.
I wonder if the Sun would listen to my argument- less dark, more light. Then again he is a travellin' fool. And I don't think he has ears. Lose/lose.
I just got into the apartment. The miscellaneous things I have accumulated over the years are laying in the living room. My things look like they're scared. Huddled in the corner, unsure of their new surroundings. They look out of place. I don't think my toilet paper, guitar, shoes, or clock have been in such close proximity before. I want to tell them I'm just as scared as they are but that it will soon all be okay.
The walls that now encompass me are waiting for their new life to begin just as much as I am. As barren as the space around me is it will soon be filled with beautiful, bright things... just like this new part of my life. We both know, my apartment and me, that these things take time. Worthwhile things take time. We are both willing to wait.
Yesterday, Amanda, Adele and I spent the day together in our state capital. Richmond. What can I say? I'm in love.
Adele and I drove up to Richmond in the morning to meet up with some folks for brunch. Amanda and Atlanta were already in RVA because the night before they had gone to see The Glitch Mob at The Hat Factory with CVT (jealous!).
We ate at Kuba Kuba. I thought this totally appropriate since just the day before I had given a 30 minute presentation on the country. If you're ever in Richmond and craving something delicious I would suggest going there. Eclectic, cozy, a decent selection of veggie options (I got the California Huevos with avacado) and tasty cornbread. Oops, almost forgot- mugs and t-shirts too!
Post-brunch I was super sluggish and desperately craving a siesta but Richmond doesn't wait. Had to soldier on. Shopped for a bit. Hit up some cute vintage and consignment shops- Exile, Rumors, Bang-On, and Plan 9 just to name a few....
Worn out. So much walking. Hit up Kuba Kuba again for three single shot espressos, tres leches and nutilla. The tres leches was a let down, pretty much just a vanilla cake, but the nutilla was good- imagine a Cuban creme brulee.
With our sweet teeth satisfied we made the ten minute drive out to see Aaron and Gillian at their house where I learned about the new fifth sense of taste, umami and was introduced to this youTube treasure:
Drove back to Norfolk just in time to watch The Messenger at the Naro. Listened to the Blakroc CD I picked up at Plan 9 earlier in the day and a Tupperware mix on the way back. Splendid way to decompress from a delightful day.
